Quality and Traceability
In the company the policy concerning quality has been driven by the requests of the customers.
To tell the truth at the beginning of our history the quality of the products was not that important. After World War II Italy was still an underdeveloped Country. When a Country exit this stage, in the first phase of the development the market accepts and buys everything. In this phase the key issue is to make the product available for the consumers. So during the 60ies and the 70ies (the years of the so called “miracolo economico italiano”) the focus of the company was on manufacturing, with very little (if any) concerns about the quality of the products.
One first important step in a very strong attention to the quality of the product has been made in the beginning of the 80ies, when export sales began. At that time the Italian market was still not very sensitive to the quality. Instead it was much more oriented to quantity and price, a mass market.
Going international was a completely different story. International customers were accustomed to have very good quality standards. In addition Italian products abroad, in general at that time had not a wonderful reputation in terms of quality and it was compulsory to overcame the bad name. To stay in the international markets has meant to develop a different attention to the quality of the products, to respect consignment times, to gain reliability as supplier, to arrange products in order to optimize the shipping with different means of transportation (truck, container, navy, airplane) and many others.
A second important step was made in the early 90ies, and it is linked to film sold to the composite producers. This market was growing in quantities, but it is extremely sensitive to quality. The film itself is a very small part of the total cost of a composite product. If its quality is poor, doesn’t fit to standards, the composite product obtained can be ruined, not conforming. To cope with this request two systems were set up at that time: a quality control sheet was included in each product, and a first basic system was established to track back all the films used in composites.
Than in 2004 a one year project lead by external consultants was carried out internally, to set up a formal quality system according to UNI ISO 9001-2000. This project has been very important, lead to the development of the company’s quality manual, to the standardization of manufacturing procedures, to the recording of processing parameters, and many other things. All these are still alive, and have been updated with time. The company has then decided not to certificate, but the culture of the quality grew up very much with this project, and it is still there.
In october 2006 Article 17 of Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 enter into force. The Regulation concerns materials and articles intended to come in contact with foods. Article 17 establishes:
The materials and articles which are placed on the market in the Community shall be identifiable by an appropriate system which allows their traceability...
Since a relevant part of our films are adressed to the food contact, a complete traceability system was set up (both for films for food and for films for other uses) covering the whole range of products.
Nowadays almost all our films are going to professional users. Their quality is daily checked by skilled, expert operators, and it has to respect preset standards. Internally speaking quality is always more important than production times. The traceability system is fully implemented, both forward (from the company to the customers) and backward (from the customers to the company’s suppliers).
The system is very complex, it is impossible to describe it in a web page. Customers see daily two things:
- the product quality control sheet, included in every single reel, every single product;
- and the traceability codes reported in every invoice.
