Polipropilene Satinato Release Film for Manufacturing Composites

Polipropilene Satinato in Reels for the Wrapping of Tubolar Items in the Roto-Traslaction Process
In 1998 the company’s research on new materials for the production of composites has got an important success with the introduction in the market of Polipropilene Satinato (matt). This film has been designed for the production of composite materials made with epoxy and polyester resins and with glass, carbon and arammidic fibers.
Polipropilene Satinato was the first film which, used in direct contact with the resin, gets a special opaque (matt) finish of the composite without the need of sanding or of painting.
This film can be used in many processing methods. In the beginning it was designed to be used with the roto-translaction process (to manufacture tubolar composites with a circular or elliptical section, and with a conical or slightly conical structure). Later on it has been successfully introduced also in manual taping (to get complex or irregular shaped items), and in moulding (to produce both flat panels and complex forms).
General Features of Polipropilene Satinato in the Manufacturing of Composite
Polipropilene Satinato is made on our specifications, with a targeted recipe concerning the polypropylene grade and a peculiar production process which gives mechanical strength and other physical features.
This film has poor mechanical properties and a limited heat-shrinkage during the curing cycle. To get tubolar items with good structural characteristics an overwrapping with another film is compulsory.
The special formulation of the film permits to use it with medium-high temperatures of polymerization (up to 140-150 C).
Thanks to the special chemical-physical composition Polipropilene Satinato has release capabilities on one side of the film. This film is not coated with laque or silicone for release purposes. In this way no transfer of coating or silicone and no contamination of the composite is possible, and there is no need to clean or sand the item after polymerization.
The Special Matt Look
Used in direct contact with the resin a matt (opaque) surface of the composite is obtained. In the production of tubolar items very light or light steps given by the thickness of the tape are left on the surface.
Primary Wrapping and Manual Taping
In the roto-translaction process and in manual taping it is used to wrap the rod to manufacture in direct contact with the resin (primary wrapping). The main function is to give the matt finish to the composite. But it also keeps all the termosetting resin within the item in the liquid stage and guarantees an easy release at the end of polymerization. In the thinner version it fits well with irregular or highly conical surfaces, so it can be used for highly conical rods and ovals.
Moulding
In moulding it is used in sheets to get flat panels or complex forms and acts as resin constraint, and releaser. A matt surface is obtained. The film is somehow ductile and fits well also with complex or irregular shapes of the mould. Mould’s walls are protected and don’t need to be cleaned after each cycle or to be sanded periodically.
Product Availability
The available nominal thicknesses are 20 and 30 micron, the density is 0,91 g/cm3, the nominal unit weights are 18 and 27 grams per square metre, the nominal yields 55 and 37 square metres per kilogram.
Release Films and Tubolar Composite’s Features
Our films for the production of composites have outstanding performances only if they are properly used. Very important are, in particular, the wrapping of the tape and polymerization’s conditions.
On this subject a specific paper is available on request.
