Polipropilene Superplanare Release Film for Manufacturing Composites
Release High Tech Films used for the Manufacturing of Composites
Polipropilene Superplanare in Reels for the Wrapping of Tubolar Items in the Roto-Traslaction Process
Launched in the market in the mid 90ies Polipropilene Superplanare is a release film which has been designed for the production of composite materials made with epoxy and polyester resins and with glass, carbon and arammidic fibers.
Polipropilene Superplanare is a film which can be used in many processing methods.
As a tape it is used both with the roto-translaction process (to manufacture tubolar composites with a circular or elliptical section, and with a conical or slightly conical structure), and in manual taping (to get complex or irregular shaped items), and for mechanical debulking (temporary compaction of many prepregs layers during lamination).
As a sheet is used in moulding to produce both flat panels and complex forms.
General Features of Polipropilene Superplanare in the Manufacturing of Composite
Polipropilene Superplanare is made on our specifications, with a targeted recipe concerning the polypropylene grade and a peculiar production process which gives mechanical strength and other physical features.
Polipropilene Superplanare is a film which has a very good planarity, good mechanical properties and a limited heat-shrinkage during the curing cycle.
The special formulation of the film permits to use it with medium-high temperatures of polymerization (up to 140-150 C).
Thanks to the special chemical-physical composition Polipropilene Superplanare has release capabilities on both sides of the film. This film is not coated with laque or silicone for release purposes. In this way no transfer of coating or silicone and no contamination of the composite is possible, and there is no need to clean or sand the item after polymerization.
When used in direct contact with the resin an extremely glossy surface of the composite is obtained. In the production of tubolar items light steps given by the thickness of the tape are left on the surface.
In the roto-translaction process and in manual taping it is used in reels to wrap the rod to manufacture both in direct contact with the resin (primary wrapping) and as over wrapping film (double taping of compaction and compression).
Primary Wrapping
In tape it is used as primary wrapping. It has the functions to give high compaction to the different layers of prepregs in the wrapping phase, to keep all the termosetting resin within the item during the liquid stage, to give good compression to the manufactured article in the polymerization phase and to guarantee an easy release at the end of polymerization.
Over Wrapping
In over wrapping another film is commonly used in contact with the resin and the Polipropilene Superplanare tape is used to give extra compaction by tensioning and higher compression to the rod thanks to the heat shrinking.
Mechanical Debulking
In mechanical debulking a certain numbers of layers of prepregs are put around a male tool, then the tape is wrapped at the maximum tensioning force to compact as much as possible the various layers together. The whole is not sent to the oven but left still to rest for a certain time. Afterwards the film is cut and removed and another cycle of lamination with further prepregs layers is carried out.
Moulding
In moulding it is used in sheets to get flat panels or complex forms and acts as resins constraint and releaser. A glossy surface is obtained.
The film is more rigid, less ductile than Polipropilene Alto Modulo and fits with shapes of the mould slightly irregular or complex.
Mould’s walls are protected and don’t need to be cleaned after each cycle or to be sanded periodically.
Polipropilene Superplanare is specifically reccomended for the manufacturing of flat panels. Here an extremely glossy surface is obtained, thanks to the very good planarity of the film.
Product Availability
The available nominal thickness is 35 micron, the density is 0,91 g/cm3, the nominal unit weight 31,5 grams per square metre, the nominal yield 32 square metres per kilogram.
General Features of Polipropilene Superstiro in the Manufacturing of Composite
Our films for the production of composites have outstanding performances only if they are properly used. Very important are, in particular, the wrapping of the tape and polymerization’s conditions.
On this subject a specific paper is available on request.
